Chapter Twenty-One

Part Three

Dante

While speaking with Ren, the sound of an explosion on his end pulsated through my ear. When I asked him what happened, there was no answer, and the call was disconnected. There weren’t many moments in my life when I’d felt sheer terror, but knowing Rainn was over at the Ikeda place sent tendrils of fear up my spine.

“Gio!” I ran out of the library shouting. “Gio!”

When I entered the kitchen, Gio was there, gun raised. “What’s all the screaming about?” Gio asked.

“We need to get over to Ren’s.”

Gio jerked his head back, a look of confusion on his face. “Why?”

“There’s been an explosion. I can’t get anyone on the line.”

No more needed to be said. Gio was already out the door, shouting names and telling them to suit up like he was some military drill sergeant.

I went into the small safe that was located below my desk and grabbed my Glock G19 and my Sig Sauer P938. I wasn’t fucking around. If someone wanted a war, then a war they’d have.

“Ready?” I asked as I exited the library and walked over to Gio, who had six of my guys with him.

“Yeah, what’s the plan?” Gio tucked his Glock in his holster.

“I don’t have one.” A flash of irritation passed over Gio’s face. “Gio, I don’t know what we’re walking into. We get there and assess.”

“Fine.” He waved the guys to follow him.

We stepped outside where three black SUVs were idling. Gio and I got in the middle one, and the others filled the front and back ones. I kept trying to call Rainn the entire time, and Gio was staring out the window. Knowing him, he was playing out all scenarios.

I’d just finished unsuccessfully trying to call Rainn when my phone buzzed.

“Yeah,” I answered.

“Dante Scavo, it’s Himari Ikeda.” There was a tremble in Ren’s sister’s voice, and she was slightly out of breath.

“Himari. Is Rainn with you?”

“No, but he told me to run and to call you. He…he wouldn’t leave Ren, he…” She began crying. I wanted to tell her to stop and just fucking talk, but there was no question she was worried for her brother.

“I’m on my way there. Are you near?”

“I ran like Rainn said to. I’m in the woods. I can see the property, but no one can see or hear me. I’m far enough away.”

“What do you see, Himari? What do you know?”

“I was sleeping, and there was a rocketing noise. I ran down the hall and saw Rainn. He told me to run, like I said. I know some back ways out of the property, so no one saw me, but I was able to see one of them, and I recognized him from a meeting my brother had. It was one of Joseph Etienne’s men, Barry.”

A part of me had suspected it was the Etiennes, but I had hoped I was wrong. If Joseph got his hands on Rainn, I wasn’t sure he’d be too kind knowing Rainn was important to me.
